PGT-A in Medellín IVF: Cost, Evidence and Quote Questions

How to separate embryo-biopsy fees, genetic-lab charges and actual evidence when PGT-A appears in an IVF proposal.

PGT-A changes both the treatment pathway and the bill

PGT-A involves testing embryo cells for chromosome-number abnormalities. It usually requires embryos to be cultured to a stage suitable for biopsy and commonly changes the cycle into a freeze-and-transfer-later pathway.

So the cost is not one line. Ask about embryo biopsy, genetic-laboratory testing, courier or sample fees if applicable, embryo freezing, storage and the later frozen embryo transfer.

The evidence question belongs beside the price question

PGT-A is not a generic upgrade that has been proven to increase the chance of a baby for every IVF patient. HFEA’s current evidence review cautions that benefits and risks differ by patient group and that testing can result in embryos being excluded from transfer.

If a clinic recommends PGT-A, ask what goal it is intended to address in your case: miscarriage risk, embryo selection, known reproductive history, age-related considerations or another reason. The answer should be medical, not simply “it improves success.”

Ask how mosaic and inconclusive results are handled

A treatment plan should explain who counsels patients about mosaic or inconclusive embryo results, whether genetic counseling is available, and whether retesting is possible or appropriate. These policies matter because a laboratory report is not always a simple green/red list.

You do not need to master embryo genetics before booking. You do need to know who interprets the results with you and how decisions are made.

The travel plan usually becomes at least two treatment episodes

When embryos are biopsied and frozen while testing is completed, transfer generally happens later. That can mean one Medellín trip for retrieval and another for FET, unless your clinic has a different medically appropriate plan.

Price the complete pathway before treating a PGT-A retrieval quote as the total IVF cost.

Questions worth sending the clinic

  1. Why is PGT-A being recommended for me?
  2. What embryo-biopsy fee does the clinic charge?
  3. What does the genetic laboratory charge, and is it per embryo or a package?
  4. What happens with mosaic or inconclusive results?
  5. What will freezing, storage and the later FET cost?
  6. How many Medellín trips does this plan realistically require?
