Embryo storage is not an afterthought

If an IVF cycle creates more suitable embryos than you transfer, freezing can preserve options for another attempt or a future sibling. That means the storage agreement may outlive the original treatment trip by years.

Before retrieval, ask what the first freezing fee covers, whether storage is billed annually, when the next invoice is due and what happens if payment information changes.

Price the future use, not only the freezing

A low cryopreservation fee can distract from the later cost of warming and transfer. Ask for the clinic’s current FET price and what is included: cycle preparation, monitoring, embryo thaw/warming, transfer and follow-up.

You are not locking in future prices forever. You are trying to understand the economic structure before embryos exist.

Consent and disposition policies deserve a real conversation

Patients should understand who controls decisions about stored embryos, how the clinic handles relationship changes, death, loss of contact and decisions to discontinue storage. The legal details depend on jurisdiction and individual circumstances.

Get the clinic’s actual consent documents before committing if long-term storage is likely to matter to you. Do not rely on a coordinator’s summary of what the forms supposedly say.

Ask whether embryos can be moved later

International patients may later want to move embryos to another facility or country. Ask whether the clinic permits release to another authorized facility, what paperwork is required and what transport coordination fees apply.

Cross-border embryo transport can involve legal, regulatory and laboratory requirements. Treat “we can ship them anywhere” as a claim that needs specifics.
