Embryo Storage Consent for International Patients: Questions Before You Leave Colombia
The practical consent, contact, billing and future-transfer questions that matter when embryos may remain stored in Medellín.
Stored embryos can outlast your relationship with the clinic coordinator
A patient may change countries, email addresses, relationships, payment cards and family-building plans while embryos remain stored. Storage therefore needs a durable administrative plan.
Ask who holds the embryos, how you update contact information and how the facility handles failed billing or prolonged loss of contact.
Read the consent documents before you are under cycle pressure
Consent questions can cover use, continued storage, disposal, research or donation, death, incapacity and disagreements between people who created embryos together. The applicable law and clinic forms matter.
Do not rely on summaries from marketing staff. Ask for the actual documents early enough to read them and seek independent advice if necessary.
International relocation adds another question
If you later want embryos shipped to another country, ask whether the storage facility permits release to another authorized center and what documentation, testing, export/import or courier arrangements may be required.
The answer may depend on the destination. A simple yes/no promise today is less useful than understanding the clinic’s transfer-out process.
Keep your own records
Save consent forms, storage agreements, invoice history, embryo inventory summaries and clinic contact information outside the clinic portal. If contact people change, your own records become the continuity layer.
Ask the clinic how often you will receive an updated storage statement and how embryo inventory is confirmed.
Questions worth sending the clinic
- Who legally/operationally holds my stored embryos?
- How do I update contact and payment information?
- Can I review the storage and disposition consent now?
- What happens if the clinic cannot reach me?
- What is the process for moving embryos to another authorized facility or country?
