Fresh vs Frozen Embryo Transfer: What Changes About Your Medellín Trip?
A travel-planning comparison for patients whose IVF plan may include fresh transfer, freeze-all or a later frozen embryo transfer.
The transfer plan can determine whether this is one trip or two
In a conventional IVF pathway, a fresh embryo transfer may occur several days after egg retrieval when clinically appropriate. In a freeze-all pathway, suitable embryos are frozen and transfer happens later in a separate cycle.
For an international patient, that distinction affects airfare, accommodation, time away from work and the point at which pregnancy testing occurs. Ask which pathway the clinic expects and what could make the plan change.
Freeze-all can be used for medical reasons
HFEA notes that freeze-all may be used to reduce risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in appropriate patients. Clinics may also recommend frozen transfer for other clinical or laboratory reasons.
Do not interpret a changed transfer plan as automatically good or bad. Ask the treating physician why the recommendation changed and what evidence applies to your case.
The FET trip can be shorter, but preparation still matters
A frozen embryo transfer cycle may involve natural-cycle monitoring or medication to prepare the uterine lining. Some monitoring may potentially occur at home if the clinic is willing to coordinate it.
Before buying the second ticket, ask when the clinic truly needs you physically in Medellín and what result could move the transfer date.
Avoid building the entire trip around a non-refundable date
Fertility treatment is sensitive to biology and monitoring. Your itinerary should have enough flexibility to survive a date shift without creating pressure to proceed when the medical plan says otherwise.
A flexible flight can be part of the treatment budget, not a luxury.
Questions worth sending the clinic
- Are you planning fresh transfer or frozen transfer, and why?
- What could make the plan change after retrieval?
- If embryos are frozen, what additional FET costs apply?
- Which FET monitoring can happen at home?
- How much date flexibility should I leave in my ticket?
