Travel timing

How Long Do You Need to Stay in Medellín for IVF?

Why the answer depends on whether you travel for full-cycle IVF, retrieval only, donor treatment or frozen embryo transfer.

Important: This guide helps organize questions, quotes and travel. A fertility specialist who knows your history must make treatment, medication and travel-clearance decisions.

There is no honest universal number of days

An IVF cycle itself can span several weeks, but an international patient may not need to be physically in Medellín for every step. Some clinics coordinate early monitoring remotely; others prefer patients present for more of stimulation.

A retrieval-only trip, a fresh-transfer trip and an FET trip are three different itineraries. Ask which one you are actually planning.

Work backward from the treatment milestones

Instead of asking “How many hotel nights?”, ask when the clinic requires the first in-person scan, when retrieval is likely, whether fresh transfer is planned and how long the clinic wants you locally afterward.

Then add schedule slack. Follicles do not follow airline reservations.

PGT-A or freeze-all usually creates another treatment episode

If embryos are biopsied or frozen for later transfer, the first trip can end after retrieval and laboratory work. The transfer then occurs in a later cycle.

That can shorten the first visit but increase total airfare and time away across the full family-building attempt. Budget both trips when comparing destinations.

The shortest possible stay is not always the cheapest plan

Changing flights, urgent extra nights, missed monitoring and stressful same-day logistics can cost more than planning a little buffer. International fertility treatment rewards flexible travel more than aggressive itinerary compression.

Ask the clinic for a realistic range and the factors that push patients toward the longer end.

Questions worth sending the clinic

  1. Which parts of this cycle require me in Medellín?
  2. Can early monitoring happen at home?
  3. Are you planning fresh transfer, freeze-all or FET?
  4. What dates are genuinely fixed and which are estimates?
  5. How many buffer nights do you recommend I keep flexible?
