Where to stay in Medellín for IVF: Poblado, Laureles or Envigado
A neighbourhood guide for a two-to-three-week IVF stay in Medellín — El Poblado, Laureles and Envigado compared on walkability, price, quiet and distance to the clinic corridor.

You'll spend more waking hours in your apartment than at the clinic. Retrieval day is one morning; the other twenty days are scans, waiting, walking, and trying not to refresh your email. So choose the neighbourhood for how you want those days to feel, then confirm the taxi time to your specific clinic — we'll check it for you.

El Poblado
The default for a reason. Hilly, tree-lined, and dense with pharmacies, cafés and supermarkets. Most internationally oriented medical facilities cluster in the southern part of the city, and Poblado sits right beside that corridor. The trade-offs: it's the priciest neighbourhood, the hills are real (a post-retrieval walk to the shop can be a climb), and the area around Parque Lleras is loud at night. Stay above the strip — Provenza's quieter streets, Manila, or the residential blocks toward Loma de los Balsos — and you get the convenience without the noise.
Choose it if this is your first visit, you want everything within a ten-minute taxi, or you'd rather not think about logistics at all.
Laureles
Flat, gridded, residential, with the best bakeries in the city and a genuinely local rhythm. The flatness matters more than it sounds: after retrieval you'll want gentle daily walks, and Laureles gives you kilometres of level, shaded pavement along Avenida Nutibara and the circulars. It's cheaper than Poblado and quieter at night away from La 70. The cost is distance — most clinics are a 15–25 minute taxi, longer in rush hour.
Choose it if you're staying the full three weeks in one go, you like walking, or you've been to Medellín before.
Envigado
Technically a separate municipality directly south of Poblado, and it feels like a small town that happens to be attached to a city. Slower, cheaper, safe, with a proper central park and a lot of families. Evenings are quiet in a way Poblado never is. Clinic access is similar to lower Poblado — 10–20 minutes by taxi depending on where exactly you're going.
Choose it if you want calm, you're travelling as a couple who'd rather cook than eat out, or budget matters and you still want to be close to the clinic corridor.
What to look for in the listing
- A lift. Many older buildings don't have one. Post-retrieval, four flights of stairs is not what you want.
- A real kitchen. You'll be eating at odd times around scans.
- Blackout curtains and a quiet street. Ask the host directly about nightlife noise.
- Hot water and water pressure. Both vary in older buildings.
- Monthly pricing. Most hosts discount 20–40% for 28+ nights. If you're doing the split-trip model, ask about a returning-guest rate for visit two.
A note on altitude
Medellín sits at about 1,495 m. If you're arriving from sea level you may feel a little breathless on Poblado's hills for the first day or two. It passes. There's no evidence it affects IVF outcomes; it just affects how the walk to the pharmacy feels.
