Flying to Medellín for IVF: airports, direct routes and the arrival day
Which airport, which direct flights, how long the transfer to Poblado takes, and how to plan the arrival day before your first scan.

Medellín's international airport is José María Córdova (MDE), and it isn't in Medellín. It sits on a plateau in Rionegro, about 45–60 minutes by road from El Poblado. The city's second airport, Olaya Herrera, handles domestic and regional flights only. Plan for MDE.
Nonstop flight time to Medellín (MDE)
Hours, typical block time, 2026. Schedules change — check before you book.
Direct routes
As of 2026, nonstop service to MDE from the US runs from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and New York, operated by a mix of Avianca, American, JetBlue and Spirit depending on the route and season. From Europe, Madrid has nonstop service. From Canada and most other US cities you'll connect — usually through Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Bogotá. Verify the current schedule; routes are added and dropped seasonally.
Connecting through Bogotá is painless: flights to Medellín run roughly hourly, cost $40–$80 one way and take an hour. If the only nonstop from your city goes to Bogotá, take it.
Before you fly
- Check-Mig. Colombia's online immigration form, completed within 72 hours before each international flight in and out. Free, five minutes, save the confirmation.
- Visa. US, Canadian, UK and EU passports get 90 days on arrival. No paperwork beyond Check-Mig.
- Medications. If you're carrying injectables from home, bring them in original packaging with a prescription letter, in a small cooler in your carry-on. Details in our medications guide.
- Records. A printed and a digital copy of anything the clinic asked for. Colombian clinics are efficient with records; airport wifi is not.
Arrival day
The descent from the Rionegro plateau into the Aburrá Valley is one of the better arrivals anywhere: mist in the valley, green mountains, the city appearing below. Take it in; it's the last unhurried hour for a while.
- Immigration is usually quick. Have the address of your apartment ready.
- Get cash from an ATM in the terminal (a few hundred thousand pesos) — some taxis take cards, not all.
- Use the official airport taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer. Expect roughly $25–$35 to Poblado or Laureles; the fare is fixed by zone. Ride apps work but pickups at MDE are inconsistent.
- Buy a local SIM at the airport or a Claro/Tigo shop near your apartment — a month of data is under $15.
Arrive the day before your first scan, not the morning of. If you're starting stimulation on arrival, the clinic will want a baseline scan and bloods on a specific day. Landing at 11pm and scanning at 8am works on paper and feels terrible in practice.
Flying home after retrieval
Most clinics are comfortable with you flying two to three days after retrieval if you feel well. Ask, and watch for the OHSS warning signs your clinic will describe — rapid bloating, nausea, breathlessness — which mean you call them before you get on any plane. Book the return with change flexibility; a day's delay in retrieval happens.
