Donor Sperm, Solo Parents and LGBTQ+ Fertility Care in Medellín: Planning Questions
A practical cross-border checklist for donor sperm, IUI/IVF pathways, documentation and clinic policies without assuming every family-building route is the same.
Start with the treatment pathway, not the label
Single patients, female couples and other LGBTQ+ families may use donor sperm with IUI, IVF or another pathway depending on medical circumstances and family-building goals. Do not let a generic “LGBTQ package” substitute for a real clinical plan.
Ask what evaluation the clinic requires, whether IUI or IVF is being recommended, and why.
Donor-source questions matter early
Clarify whether the clinic works with its own donor bank, external banks or both; what screening applies; what donor information is available; and whether imported donor sperm is accepted. If you already have vials stored elsewhere, ask about shipping, paperwork and laboratory acceptance before purchasing treatment.
Cross-border reproductive material can involve legal and logistics rules beyond the clinic itself, so get written instructions for your specific source and destination.
Ask how parentage and documentation are handled
Medical treatment and legal parentage are separate questions. Clinics can explain their treatment consent forms, but international patients may also need independent legal advice about parentage, birth registration or use of donor material across jurisdictions.
This is especially important when home-country rules differ from Colombia’s rules. Do not rely on a fertility coordinator to give final legal conclusions.
The simple lead form should stay simple
You should not have to disclose sexual orientation, relationship status or intimate medical history just to ask whether a clinic handles donor-sperm treatment. Those details can be shared later with the clinical team when relevant.
For initial coordination, treatment interest, preferred contact method and timing are enough.

- Which donor banks or sources do you work with?
- Can you accept sperm already stored in another country?
- What donor information and screening records are available?
- Which legal/document questions should I take to independent counsel?
