IVF in Medellín from Canada: waitlists, funding limits, flights and cost
For Canadian patients — how Medellín compares with waiting for a provincially funded cycle, what the trip costs, flight routes from Toronto and Montreal, and the medical expense tax credit.

Canadian patients come to Medellín for a reason that has nothing to do with clinic quality at home: time. Provincial fertility programmes fund a limited number of cycles, run waitlists that stretch to many months, and set eligibility rules on age and prior treatment. Self-pay at a Canadian clinic runs comparable to the US. Colombia gives you a start date you control.

The funding picture, briefly
Ontario funds one IVF cycle per patient per lifetime through participating clinics, with a waitlist that varies by clinic and has run to a year or more at busy centres. Quebec runs its own programme with its own age and cycle limits. Other provinces offer tax credits, grants or partial coverage rather than funded cycles, and some offer nothing. Medications are generally not covered by the funded cycle. The details change; check your province's current programme before deciding anything, and if you're on a waitlist, stay on it — a trip to Medellín doesn't cost you your place.
Flights
Nonstop service between Canada and Medellín has come and gone seasonally; as of 2026 most Canadian patients connect once, through Bogotá, Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Toronto to Medellín with one connection is typically eight to ten hours door to door; Montreal similar. Bogotá is the cleanest connection: frequent one-hour hops to Medellín and no US transit. See the flights guide.
Winter timing
Medellín at 22 °C in February is not a small part of the appeal. The split-trip model works well with Canadian winters: monitor at home in January, fly in for retrieval, come back for the frozen transfer whenever it suits. If you have a monitoring clinic near you — most large Canadian cities do — ask the Medellín clinic what they need transmitted.
The medical expense tax credit
Canada's non-refundable medical expense tax credit (METC) can apply to eligible fertility treatment costs, including some incurred outside Canada, and to certain travel costs when treatment isn't available locally. Whether your Medellín costs qualify depends on your circumstances and how the CRA reads the rules that year. Keep every receipt, get the clinic's invoice itemised, and talk to an accountant who has claimed the METC for treatment abroad before. This is not tax advice.
What's different from the US patient experience
- No visa or paperwork beyond Colombia's online Check-Mig form; Canadian passports get 90 days.
- Your provincial health card doesn't cover anything abroad. Buy travel medical insurance and read the fertility-treatment exclusion — most policies exclude complications of elective treatment. Ask us about a supplemental option.
- Records: Canadian clinics release records on request; ask for your full file including any prior cycle sheets and embryology reports.
