IVF Quote Checklist for Medellín: What Should Be Included?

The cheapest IVF quote may simply be the shortest quote

Fertility treatment prices are unusually easy to misunderstand because the medical cycle, laboratory work, medication, freezing and later transfer can be billed in different ways. A clinic can advertise a low IVF price while leaving stimulation medication, ICSI, embryo freezing, storage or a frozen transfer outside the number.

That does not automatically make the clinic expensive or misleading. It means the first number is not enough to compare providers. HFEA consumer guidance makes the same basic point: get a fully costed treatment plan and check what is and is not included.

Build the quote around the actual treatment path

Start by asking what the clinic expects your cycle to include based on the information it has today. Standard IVF, IVF with ICSI, a freeze-all plan, donor eggs, embryo testing and frozen embryo transfer are not interchangeable packages.

A useful quote identifies the base treatment and then lists conditional items separately. If ICSI is only used when semen parameters or prior fertilization history justify it, ask whether the price is included only if used. If a fresh transfer may be replaced by freezing all embryos for a medical reason, ask what the later FET will cost.

Medication deserves its own line

Stimulation drugs can be a meaningful part of self-pay IVF cost and the exact dose may not be known until a clinician reviews your ovarian reserve, history and response. Do not demand a fake precise number early. Ask for the medication assumption used in the estimate, which drugs are included, which are purchased separately and how the budget changes if the dose changes.

Medication planning is also a travel issue. Ask whether prescriptions must be filled in Colombia, whether part of stimulation can occur at home, and who is responsible for monitoring if treatment starts before you arrive.

Laboratory services are where quote comparisons often break

Clarify fertilization method, embryo culture, whether blastocyst culture is standard, assisted hatching or other add-ons, cryopreservation, first-year storage and any embryo biopsy or genetic testing fees. Separate the embryology-lab fee from the outside genetic-laboratory fee when PGT is proposed.

The goal is not to buy every available technology. It is to understand which laboratory steps are medically recommended for your case, which are optional and which are simply bundled into the clinic’s normal workflow.

Do not forget the second half of a freeze-all cycle

If the plan is retrieval now and frozen embryo transfer later, ask for both episodes. The retrieval package may end when embryos are frozen. A later FET can involve medication, monitoring, thawing, transfer and another block of travel.

This is one of the easiest ways a “one-cycle” comparison becomes misleading. Budget the pathway that is actually being proposed, not only the first visit to the clinic.
