ICSI in a Medellín IVF Quote: Included, Conditional or Unnecessary?
Why ICSI should be a clinical decision and a clearly labeled price line, not an automatic upsell hidden inside every IVF package.
ICSI is a fertilization technique, not a deluxe version of IVF
With ICSI, an embryologist injects a single sperm into an egg. It is performed as part of an IVF cycle, commonly when sperm-related infertility or certain prior fertilization problems make standard insemination less suitable.
That means the quote question is straightforward: why is ICSI in this plan? HFEA guidance says there is not scientific support for routinely choosing ICSI over standard IVF when infertility is not related to sperm issues simply to improve outcomes.
Ask whether the clinic uses ICSI routinely
Some laboratories use ICSI in a very high proportion of cycles. That may reflect their patient population, testing practices or laboratory preference. You do not need to assume that routine use is wrong; you do need to know whether your doctor is recommending it for a specific reason.
If the answer is “we always do ICSI,” ask what evidence or clinic policy supports that approach in patients like you and whether conventional IVF is an option.
Make the price line conditional if the treatment is conditional
If the clinic expects to decide about ICSI after reviewing semen analysis, previous fertilization history or day-of-retrieval findings, the quote can show it as a possible additional charge instead of pretending the final treatment is already known.
That makes competing quotes much easier to compare. Clinic A may look more expensive because ICSI is bundled into every cycle while Clinic B lists it separately only when used.
ICSI success is not the same as IVF live-birth success
ICSI can be highly effective at achieving fertilization in appropriate cases, but pregnancy and live birth still depend on many other factors. HFEA notes that ICSI pregnancy success is broadly similar to IVF and does not publish separate overall success statistics for ICSI.
Be wary when a salesperson uses a high fertilization percentage as though it were your personal chance of taking home a baby.
