IVF in Medellín From Aruba, Curaçao or Bonaire: A Planning Guide

A short flight changes how an IVF trip can be planned. Here is what Dutch Caribbean residents should sort out with their insurer, local doctor and the Medellín clinic.

A small plane window view over turquoise Caribbean water

For people living on Aruba, Curaçao or Bonaire, fertility treatment often means leaving the island. Specialised IVF services on small islands are limited by population size, and many patients look outward: to the Netherlands, to the United States, or to nearby Latin America. Colombia is close, Spanish is already familiar to many island residents alongside Papiamento and Dutch, and Medellín has a well-developed private health sector. For some families it is a natural option to compare.

This guide is written for Dutch Caribbean residents considering IVF in Medellín. It covers the questions that are different for you: what to clarify with your insurer before you go, how to coordinate testing on the island, the shape of a trip from a short-haul starting point, documents, and getting care when you return. It is planning information only. Insurance rules, travel requirements and medical recommendations are individual, so confirm each step with the relevant organisation and your doctor.

Start with your insurer, not the clinic

Each island has its own health insurance arrangements, and coverage for fertility treatment, and especially for treatment abroad, can depend on your policy, a referral from a local specialist, and prior approval. Some people have private or employer cover on top of the public scheme. Before you request quotes in Medellín, ask your insurer:

  1. Is any part of fertility treatment covered under my policy, and does that include IVF?
  2. Is treatment abroad covered, and if so, only in certain countries or with certain contracted providers?
  3. Do I need a referral from a gynaecologist or specialist on the island, and prior authorisation before treatment begins?
  4. Are travel and accommodation ever reimbursed for referred care?
  5. Which tests and consultations can be done locally under my cover before I travel?
  6. How would pregnancy care be handled after treatment abroad?

Get the answers in writing. If your insurer will only cover care with contracted providers abroad, that list may decide your options before price does. If you are paying privately, it is still worth knowing what local testing your insurance includes.

Do not pay a deposit until you know your coverage. If prior approval is required and you start treatment without it, you may lose reimbursement you would otherwise have had.

Use your short distance to your advantage

Patients flying from Europe or North America often try to minimise the number of trips. From the ABC islands, the flight to Colombia is relatively short, though routes, frequencies and connections change and may route through other cities, so check current schedules. Shorter travel opens planning options that long-haul patients rarely have:

Consultation visit firstFly in for an in-person consultation and baseline tests, then return home to start treatment later.Whether an in-person first visit adds value over a remote consultation for your case.

Our article on starting monitoring at home goes deeper into how remote monitoring works.

Coordinating with doctors on the island

A local gynaecologist can be a key partner, both before and after treatment. A good working arrangement often includes:

Ask the Medellín clinic how it prefers to receive results: format, units and who reviews them. Ask your local doctor whether they are comfortable coordinating with a clinic abroad. Not every doctor will be, and it is better to know early.

Language and paperwork

Many island residents speak Spanish, which makes daily life in Medellín easier. Medical Spanish is a different skill, though, and consent forms deserve careful reading. Ask for documents in advance. If your insurer or a Dutch-speaking doctor at home needs reports, ask the clinic whether it can provide English summaries, and plan for translation if Dutch is required. Our guide to records lists what to send before your consultation.

For travel, check current entry requirements for your passport before booking. Residents of the ABC islands may hold Dutch passports or other nationalities, and requirements can differ. Make sure your passport has enough validity.

Medications across a short flight

A short flight makes carrying refrigerated medications simpler than for long-haul patients, but the basics still apply:

Thinking about cost

We do not publish prices here; get an itemised written quote. When comparing Medellín with options in the Netherlands or elsewhere, include insurance coverage for each option, the number of trips each plan requires, accommodation, time off work and childcare. A cheaper cycle abroad that your insurer will not reimburse may cost more out of pocket than a covered cycle elsewhere. The reverse can also be true.

After you come home

You will most likely take your pregnancy test and receive early pregnancy care on the island. Before you leave Medellín, make sure you have:

If you have frozen embryos left in Medellín, note the storage terms, the renewal date and what the clinic needs from you each year.

Family and work at home

On a small island, privacy can matter. Some patients prefer that colleagues and neighbours do not know they are having fertility treatment. Think about how you will explain short absences, who will look after children or pets during a Medellín stay, and whom you can call if a cycle is cancelled or a result is disappointing. A shorter trip pattern can make all of this easier, but it helps to have a plan for the version of the trip that runs a few days longer than expected.

If your partner needs to provide a sample on retrieval day, check whether their work allows them to travel on short notice. If not, ask the clinic whether sperm can be frozen on an earlier visit.

Questions people ask

Will my insurance on Aruba, Curaçao or Bonaire pay for IVF in Colombia?

It depends on your insurer and policy. Some require a local referral and prior approval for treatment abroad, or only cover contracted providers. Ask your insurer in writing before committing to a clinic.

Can I do IVF monitoring on the island and only fly to Medellín for retrieval?

Often this is possible if a local doctor can perform scans and blood tests and the Medellín clinic accepts the results. Confirm both sides before you plan around it.

How many trips to Medellín will I need?

That depends on whether you do a fresh or frozen transfer and how much monitoring happens at home. Short flights from the ABC islands make a two-trip plan more practical than it is for long-haul patients.

Will the Medellín clinic provide reports in Dutch?

Spanish and sometimes English are more likely. Ask what languages the clinic can provide, and plan for translation if your insurer or local doctor needs Dutch.

Who handles my pregnancy care after treatment abroad?

Usually your local gynaecologist and island health services. Bring a complete treatment summary and arrange an appointment before you travel.
