IVF is laboratory medicine as much as it is physician care

The fertility doctor designs and manages the clinical treatment, but fertilization, embryo culture, biopsy, freezing and warming occur in the laboratory. A clinic comparison that only evaluates the physician profile misses half the process.

Ask who is responsible for embryology and which parts of laboratory work happen onsite versus through an outside organization.

Ask about communication, not just technology

How will you learn how many eggs were mature, how many fertilized, how embryos progressed and what was frozen? Does an embryologist speak with patients directly or does information come through a coordinator?

A clear reporting process is especially valuable when you are in another country and may already be home by the time later laboratory milestones occur.

Add-ons belong in the lab conversation

If the clinic proposes time-lapse imaging, assisted hatching, PGT-A or another laboratory add-on, ask what it changes in your case and what evidence supports it.

The presence of expensive equipment is not itself proof of better live-birth outcomes.

Trace the chain when outside labs are involved

Genetic testing may involve embryo biopsy at the fertility laboratory and analysis elsewhere. Ask which laboratory receives samples, how samples are identified, how results return, who counsels you on results and what happens if the report is inconclusive.
